In general, it is estimated that between 12 and 15 percent of the car weight is composed from plastic. According to the Plastic Association Industry there are up to thousand pieces of this material, soft and hard, flexible and rigid, in the seats, the dashboard, tanks of all kinds.
The most common is polypropylene, which constitutes one third of all varieties in the vehicle and is mixed with other types to form deformable parts such as bumpers. One of the greatest benefits of plastic, from driver’s point of view , is that its lightness saves fuel: ten percent less weight leads to a 5 percent reduction in consumption.
If the plastic had never entered the assembly line, the cars now would have weigh between 200 and 300 kilos more.
